Yesterday was a first. But, my nephew Brody has been having many of those during the last nine months of his little life.
Yesterday evening was Brody's first baseball game. As always, he was a complete trooper. I have never met a kid that is more easy going. He thinks that he can do anything that anyone else is doing. He is completely fearless. I both admire and worry about this trait.
One of the things that struck me during yesterday's game was that we take so much for granted. In our busy lives, we no longer make time for things that are slow and easy-going. How often do we overlook the magic of the moment? As a result, are we missing the biggest play of our lives?
Brody's biggest fascination with yesterday's game was the netting around the field. When we took him out on the field, he didn't care that even "the dirt" was AstroTurf. He was excited by the other kids running the bases. He was excited about the right things, not the superficial.
It may have been Brody's first game and my thousandth, but I still think it's magical.
